Mature, responsible, self reliant, friendly, and ever the big sister is Kaitlyn in so many words. Growing up taking care of her younger sisters and brother taught her how to take care of herself and others. She is determined and self motivated. Not the kind to ask many questions, but to go home later and figure it out on her own. Protective of those she’s close to, always doing her best to guide them in the right direction -- though some times she comes off as a little pushy and strict.
Typically she can be found someplace quiet reading, or typing away on her laptop, but if you stop by to say hello she’ll gladly put her things aside to talk. Just be careful you can handle what she has to say. Kaitlyn will talk about the weather, sport, and other generic things until the cows come home, but if you ask her advice or her opinion on something she’ll tell you the truth. Kat doesn’t sugar coat things, and will tell you if she thinks your doing something incorrectly.
No matter how much experience she has with people younger then her, children and peers, teaching them -- Kat is still easily frustrated. If she is trying to help you, and feels you’re not putting the same amount of effort into it she will get upset. An angry Kat is not a pleasant sight. She will yell and can hold a grudge like you wouldn’t believe, and even if she knows she’s wrong it will often take a little while for her to get over it. She’s stubborn like that.
Kaitlyn has a weakness for stray cats, which has resulted in her owning three of her own, and it takes a serious act of will power to restrain herself from taking in any more. How could she not? They’re adorable, and just left on the streets. Plus, she used to be one…
Romantic gestures, even small ones, easily reduce her to a blushing mess. She really doesn’t expect things like that, and is useless when it comes to making such gestures towards people she cares about. Sugary gifts are preferred.
Her mother was German, spoke the language, which was passed on to her children. She doesn't use it often, but when she's angry German words and phrases have a habit of popping up now and then
Being the daughter of a doctor and a nurse herself -- she is a bit of a neat freak.
→ history
Kaitlyn is a jersey girl, born and raised with the loud, rough family to go along with it. She’s the oldest of four children, and the peace keeper in the single parent home. Her father, Dr. Aaron Bell has always done his best, and is a good father to be sure, but it is hard to handle four children all on his own. His wife passed away, victim of a car crash when his youngest was only three years old.
Mrs. Felicia Bell had been the picture of the perfect mother and housewife before her death. Born in Frankfurt, Germany. Daughter of a chef and seamstress, she followed in her mother’s footsteps. Content in her life until she turned twenty-three and met Aaron Bell. A bright eyed twenty seven year old man from New Jersey, backpacking through Europe one summer with his friends. It was only a stroke of luck that they met. He -- a dumb tourist. She -- a friendly, helpful German with a touch of experience with the English language. A year later she moved to the U.S. Two years later she was pregnant and they were married twice -- once in Jersey, once in Frankfurt.
Kaitlyn was the first, and they hadn’t intended to have any more children, but seven years later an accidental little gift came in the form of Terra. Jack and Samantha followed soon after. She stayed home to raise the children, still working as a seamstress from home like her mother had before her, and for a few years life seemed perfect. She’d been on her way home from the grocery store one afternoon with the youngest, Samantha, in the back seat when a reckless driver ran a red light. The driver’s seat, Felicia with it, had been crushed. The poor three year old in the back cut up, crying, motherless, but otherwise unharmed.
Fourteen at the time, Kat was an excellent student with hopes of being a doctor like her father, a fondness for cats, and a strange habit of staring at the moon, insisting for years that a princess surely lived there in a shimmering palace of silver and diamonds. Of course, she grew out of those beliefs by the typical age, turning her childhood fancies into bedtime stories for her younger siblings. After their mother passed away, she took it harder then the others as they were to young to really understand. Kat had always been mature for her age though, and at seeing how difficult the loss was for her father on top of that the responsibility of raising all of them she did her best to lessen his burden, more then willing to step up to the plate. He took fewer hours at work, spending as much time at home as he could, but when he was away Kat picked the others up from school, helped them with their homework, and even learned to cook. It all came naturally to her; teaching, guiding, and cleaning up ‘boo-boos.’
Under big sister’s watchful eye the Bell children excelled in school. Private school, of course, that their father paid for so they could get the very best education and go to the same school. After Kaitlyn graduated she was promptly offered a place at numerous medical schools and a number of scholarships, but opted to stay relatively close to home -- attending New York University’s college of nursing.
College. Now that was an experience. No siblings to look after anymore, though they still called their big sister often for advice, it afforded her a lot more time to have fun. For someone as dedicated to her studies, she still managed to make quite a few friends. She went to parties, joined a few clubs, even enjoyed two long relationships. A young man by the name of Alex; funny, sweet, a bit of a jock, but it kept her active and she enjoyed going to football games. A year and a half it lasted, but no matter how good things were with him, she couldn’t help but think of him only as a best friend. As much as she hated to do it, they broke up her sophomore year, and unfortunately they haven’t spoken since. The second was with a girl. (It was college, experimenting is hardly unusual.) They hit it off really well too, and for a while Kat fancied herself in love, but something still didn’t feel right. She didn’t understand why, but she had her whole life ahead of her. Plenty of time for love later.
Graduation again -- and not exactly the top of her class, but good enough to get plenty of job offers. An internship at a hospital for a year, night classes on the side, but it was awful. She loved helping people, patching them up, but couldn’t she had her limits. Some injuries were just too gruesome. She liked working with younger kids instead, like taking care of her siblings, and started looking into jobs at schools. Which would eventually lead to her employment at New York Prep.
Between the two jobs, however, something quite remarkable happened. She’d been on a date. (Never anything too serious, but she could still have fun with people, right?) It had been going well enough. An early dinner followed by a trip to the Natural History Museum to see their show on space. Laying on the floor, looking up at the large dome where stars were project, the universe was shown, and in the middle of it -- the moon. Bright, full, radiant -- and in an instant everything around her vanished in an impossible explosion of light. Of course, no one else noticed this, not that it mattered as she passed out shortly afterward. The guy she'd been on a date with a the time brought her home and looked after her, but didn't call again for another date.
Weeks before thoughts of her old bed time stories kept coming to mind. She would dream, dreams so vivid they almost seemed real in the morning. Kaitlyn remembered a blond girl, one she was so very fond of, but only vaguely. Snippets of conversations, names that otherwise meant nothing to her, strange creatures, and a kingdom so far away. She’d brushed them off as nothing. It’s not like anything like that really meant anything. They were just dreams, none of it was real, she reasoned them away, and pushed it all to the back of her mind.
Forgotten until the night at the museum, and then everything came rushing back. Memories, names and faces, her purpose -- Much was still foggy, and if she tried too hard to remember details it would only make her head ache, but she got the general idea, and felt that things would get clearer with time.
It was part of the reason she applied for the school. She had to find the girls, had to help them wake up the same as she had, and what better place to start then a school? Had too because the peace had not lasted quite so long as they had hoped. Darkness was coming.
